Colton Seale

Colton led the development of the Interview & Interrogation (I&I) training for the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HIG) which is recognized as revolutionizing I&I training and bringing science into the art of interviewing.

While with the HIG, Colton taught the HIG I&I courses to thousands of members of the U.S. Intelligence Community as well as developing training programs for some of the U.S.’s premier law enforcement agencies and many of our foreign partners, including NYPD and LAPD.


Through his 22-year career as an FBI Special Agent, Colton conducted thousands of interviews and led a variety of specialty teams in high-pressure, high-stakes settings domestically and internationally, including in the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.

Colton brings a wealth of knowledge and experience relating to counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal matters to every group he works with.

Colton is passionate about interviewing and about using the most recent science to work with your teams to help them become the absolute best they can be at their craft.

Colton is a certified coach and brings a coaching ethos to working with your team members to fulfill their best potential.

Colton has an M.A. in Public Policy from the University of Chicago and B.A. from University of California, Davis (Political Science and Philosophy).

  • Fundamentals of human thinking and situational assessment
  • Following a process to plan for the interview.
  • Scenario-based exercise

Opening Lines & Questioning Strategies

  • Developing an effective, tailored opening for the interview.
  • Managing the conversation with clear objectives and a planned questioning strategy using the Funnel-Method of Conversation Management.

Introduction to Rapport

  • Discussion of what rapport is and what it is not.
  • Affect, Behavior, Cognition (ABC) Model of rapport
  • Introduction to the BASE Model of Rapport™ (Belonging, Agency, Security, Empathy) and moving the interviewee to a place of wanting to talk to us.
Day 2

Reflective Interviewing

  • Developing the ability to further conversation without direct questions.
  • Exercise in pairs using BASE and Reflections

Interpersonal Behavor

  • Identifying specific adaptive and maladaptive behaviors.
  • Managing challenging behaviors and deescalating confrontation via adapting our behaviors.

  • Conversational strategies to move avoidant interviewees to cooperative

Memory & Cognitive Interview

  • Avoiding common interview mistakes that can contaminate memory.
  • Using specific techniques to increase information gain by up to 75 percent.
Day 3

Cognitive Interview Exercise

  • Putting BASE and Cognitive Interview into practice in pairs.

Deception Detection

  • Looking at the myths and realities of credibility assessment.
  • Introducing a science-based, verbal methodology for credibility assessment.
  • Classroom exercise.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

GSPCC has a 10-day cancellation policy. Any cancellations less than 10 days from the class start date will not be refunded. Because seating in our courses can be limited, we ask that all cancellations be made at least 10 days prior to the class start date.

We understand there may be exceptions due to unforeseen serious events. If your cancellation is due to a serious issue and is not within 10 days of the first day of the class, GSPCC staff will evaluate the circumstances and work with you on a refund.
